Home Again by The Banyan Gives A Hope For Many lives- A Film Shows Experiences of Survivors

The Banyan- A Nonprofit Organization

The Banyan, a nonprofit organization, Serving people experiencing intersections of homelessness, mental illness, and disabilities in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Maharashtra, and beyond, shared a film with experiences of the survivors of mental illness, brings joy in many lives. With the aim of helping people transition out of mental hospitals and move into homes where they live and are cared for as families. The Banyan’s Home Again program brought hope to many families to lead life happily. This film, created by @bharatbala Productions (BBP), shows us the story of survivors, who came forward to share their experiences.

Experiences come out with a smile

[A gentle piano track accompanies shots of Home Again residents in and around their homes, as voiceovers (in English) relay their experiences of transitioning out of mental hospitals and into residential homes. ]

‘On my way home,

I remember when I used to be hidden behind large walls

That kept me away from the world’ the voiceover says, as Kousali walks out of her home.

‘My mind took me to dark confusing places;

I was shunned by my family and society,

labeled as ‘crazy’ and cast away.

But I’m restored, we hear’ as Ajay, in a checked shirt,

walks past a bright blue wall and smiles at the camera.

‘I was kept alive by my love for my daughter.

I am a mother, you see’ we hear as Kousali beams.

‘I stayed alive for my sister’ we hear, as Amali and Jacklin appear on screen, a pond behind them.

‘I found friends who were kind to me. I am a survivor,

we hear as Lokesh, leaning against a boulder with the ocean behind him, looks pensively at the camera.

‘I’m back home now, and I love life,” the voice says, as cameras pan out to show Janaki, Amali, and Kousali standing at the same shore. As the sun sets behind them, sinking into the sheets of rippled water, the residents introduce themselves to the camera, and the music fades.
