Hyderabad: Aware Gleneagles Global Hospital, a leading healthcare provider in the city, today conducted an awareness section on seizures and epilepsy. The session was organized to commemorate International Epilepsy Day 2022. Doctors during the session stressed the need to increase awareness on the subject, and be more sensitive towards the issue

Epilepsy is like any other ailment

Speaking at the session, Dr. Suresh Reddy, Consultant Neuro physician, Aware Gleneagles Global Hospital said, “There are numerous misunderstandings and wrong practices in the society around epilepsy ailment. Epilepsy is like any other ailment and can be corrected with the right medical attention. Epilepsy is caused due to disturbance in the brain’s electrical activity, and this can occur in people of all ages. 70% of epilepsy cases can be cured with medicines, and surgical interventions will help resolve any epilepsy problem completely.”

“Most seizure attacks are temporary and are curable with medicines. Putting iron items in the hands of patients during epileptic seizures is a dangerous practice. Because due to severe physical movement, there is a possibility of them getting hurt due to the iron items. Instead, patients must be given time and the brain will self adjust to become normal,” added Dr. Praveen Changala, Consultant Neuro Physician, Aware Gleneagles Global Hospital.

Excessive consumption of alcohol and nicotine could lead to epilepsy; women during pregnancy could suffer seizures; kids due to some birth complications could get seizures. Hence, there are numerous reasons to get epilepsy, and there are as many means to cure the ailment.
